Enhancing Authentic Learning in Primary Care: Real-Time Immersive Experiences in Family Medicine Clerkships

Primary care in the Netherlands faces a growing mismatch between demand and workforce capacity: while the need for Family Medicine (FM) is rising due to population growth and ageing, fewer graduates choose FM and many current practitioners are reducing or ending their practice. In 2024, about 60% of FM practices stopped accepting new patients, and around 1 in 20 people are seeking or changing family physicians, with shortages expected to worsen (Rekenkamer, 2025). This also limits the availability of FM training placements, threatening the future workforce (Van Dijk, 2011; Onderzoeksrapport Extramurale capaciteit, 2025). This project introduces IX by applying Virtual Clinical Experiences (VCE™) into Dutch FM clerkships; an approach that has shown strong results in the UK but has not yet been implemented in Dutch medical education. VCE™ allows students to participate in real patient consultations live via secure audiovisual technology, enabling multiple learners to be supervised simultaneously without increasing workload for individual practices (Gomez, 2024, 2025). We will use design-based research to develop, test, and improve this new IX training model in close collaboration with students, educators, and FM practices, by learning what works and what does not, and refining it while systematically measuring educational quality, feasibility, and supervision load. The novelty of this project lies in being the first to adapt and embed IX within Dutch Family Medicine undergraduate training, creating a new form of digitally supported workplace learning that fits the Dutch healthcare context. By expanding training capacity without increasing pressure on practices, the project aims to improve learning outcomes and increase students’ interest in FM as a career. If successful, this scalable model can also be applied to other clerkships and specialty training programmes, contributing to a more sustainable primary-care workforce in the Netherlands.

Experience the future, embrace the change: The potential of IX to create and leverage teachable moments and improve lifestyle behaviors in osteoarthritis patients

A healthy lifestyle is crucial for many patient populations, helping reduce symptoms, prevent disease progression, and optimize medical procedures. Yet, standard doctor’s advice or risk communication alone rarely leads to lasting behavior change. Doctor consultations can create powerful ‘teachable moments’, a patient’s sudden realization of a disease’s consequences, such as acute symptoms or limited mobility. While these moments offer a crucial window of opportunity for behavior change, they are not universal and their potential impact is not fully realized. This innovative project systematically investigates how and when immersive experiences (IX) effectively and responsibly promote health behaviour change in osteoarthritis (OA) patients through a structured, multi-method approach. Specifically, it explores whether IX can create and reinforce teachable moments to enhance motivation for behaviour change. OA is a highly prevalent chronic joint disease that causes pain and reduced mobility. OA is associated with obesity, and weight loss in OA patients improves clinical outcomes, including reducing the need for knee replacement and revision surgeries. IX will be explored in two ways. As motivation igniters, they allow patients to vividly experience a teachable moment, by experiencing the long-term consequences of unhealthy behaviour in an emotionally compelling way. As motivation sustainers, IX can reinforce teachable moments by helping patients visualize goals and strengthen commitment to long-term lifestyle change. This approach translates abstract health risks and goals into tangible, motivating experiences. A unique aspect of this project is the formation of a multidisciplinary consortium that bridges a university, a top clinical hospital, and industry partners. This consortium is uniquely positioned to identify OA patients’ needs and preferences, co-design immersive scenarios, and ensure feasibility and ethical integrity. This project serves as a stepping stone toward a modular immersive lifestyle intervention for various lifestyle-related diseases, bridging the gap between limited lifestyle guidance and the continuous support patients need.

Staging collective VR experiences

Immersive technologies are reshaping how audiences experience art and culture. An important question to be answered though is: how can museums efficiently onboard large groups of visitors into fully interactive, multi-player VR experiences? This challenge marks a crucial frontier for institutions seeking to blend innovation with accessibility. Across the globe, museums have successfully integrated single-player VR applications, offering visitors static yet engaging virtual encounters with art. These experiences have proven to attract younger audiences and enrich visitors’ engagement. However, the next step—transforming VR into a shared, interactive medium—holds even greater potential. Multi-player VR allows visitors not only to explore but to interact with each other within virtual spaces, redefining how exhibitions are perceived, curated, and experienced. Realizing this potential is far from straightforward. Large-scale, interactive VR installations come with unique technical and logistical demands, particularly during the onboarding process. Managing multiple participants simultaneously often requires intensive, hands-on guidance, making current setups unsustainable for continuous museum use. This research proposes to address that bottleneck by co-design an efficient, scalable onboarding method for multi-player VR exhibitions in museum contexts. The outcome aims to bridge the gap between artistic design, technological promise and practical implementation, unlocking new opportunities for museums and contributing to valuable insights for the broader Interaction and Experience (IX) industry.

Thuis

Thuis wil een dieper gevoel van verbondenheid bevorderen door immersieve ervaringen te herinterpreteren als een belichaamde en toegankelijke praktijk in (semi-)openbare ruimtes, waarbij dans en beweging als kernmethoden worden gebruikt. Thuis wil het Nederlandse IX-veld versterken door lichaamsgerichte ontwerpprincipes aan te reiken die de afhankelijkheid van hardware uitdagen, en door deelbare kennis te leveren over het creëren van toegankelijke, inclusieve IX als een vorm van 'maatschappelijke infrastructuur' die sociale cohesie en collectief saamhorigheidsgevoel bevordert. Het onderzoek richt zich op hoe het lichaam een centralere rol kan krijgen in immersieve ervaringen en hoe een gevoel van thuis kan worden bevorderd onder deelnemers. Dit onderzoek is opgebouwd rond drie thema's: ‘spatial awareness’, ‘embodied empathy’ en ‘collective belonging’. Het activiteitenprogramma volgt een onderzoeksmethodologie door middel van ontwerp, gestructureerd in vier iteratieve fasen: 'collecting’, ‘processing’, ‘shaping, and ‘engaging’. Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd met gemeenschappen in openbare ruimtes. Deze methodologie zal resulteren in twee artistieke pilots (een in de buitenlucht, en een binnen), een casestudy, een open-source website en publieke events.

Stage IX

LAUNCHPAD NINE heeft als doel de gefragmenteerde Nederlandse IX-sector te transformeren door een op kunstenaars gerichte infrastructuur op te bouwen die creatie, productie, presentatie en onderwijs verenigt. Het activiteitenprogramma genereert openlijk toegankelijke methodologieën en toolkits, creëert duurzame talenttrajecten en herwint verbeeldingskracht door technologiegedreven paradigma's uit te dagen. Het programma werkt met intensieve residenties die zijn opgezet rond praktijkgericht onderzoek met opkomende en gevestigde kunstenaars en collectieven, die via een open oproep worden aangetrokken. Elke residentie omvat workshops, prototyping en publieke activaties. Artistieke creatieprocessen fungeren als de belangrijkste onderzoeksmotor, waarbij residenties inzichten genereren in drie onderzoeksgroepen: ‘pedagogy, knowledge exchange & documentation’, ‘sustainable production workflows’, en ‘audience engagement & experience’.

EGG: Hoe een immersieve kunst beleving over transitie doorwerkt in het dagelijks leven van mensen en groepen in een wijk

EGG is een grootschalige, zintuiglijk interactieve en lerende kunstinstallatie in de vorm van een ei die uitnodigt tot ontmoeting en gesprek over maatschappelijke systeemtransities. De sculptuur heeft een gladde, organische vorm. Bezoekers kunnen ertegenaan leunen, erop klimmen en zich er vrij omheen bewegen. Ze kunnen het ‘broedproces’ van een onbekend, fictief wezen in het ei zintuiglijk ervaren. Door inzet van augmented reality (AR) en sensortechnologie reageert EGG op warmte, licht en geluid. Hierdoor ontstaat een responsief en deels onvoorspelbaar systeem dat spontane ontmoetingen en gesprekken tussen omstanders over transities in de wijk uitlokt. Bij de uitvoering van het project en het onderzoek wordt de Richtlijn Publieke Waarden voor Immersive Experiences (CIIIC) gehanteerd als kader voor zorgvuldige omgang met bezoekers, data en maatschappelijke impact. Kunst en performance kunnen wezenlijke effecten hebben op empathie, betekenisgeving en perspectiefwisseling (Brown & Novak-Leonard, 2011; Broadhead & Hooper, 2024; Norton, 2015). De kennis over hoe dergelijke ervaringen doorwerken in dagelijks handelen, sociale relaties en wijkgebonden transitiepraktijken (Spaas, 2024; Horvath et al., 2025) is echter beperkt. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de vraag: hoe klinkt de installatie en haar ontwikkeling in de tijd door mensen en in wijkgebonden transitieprocessen (Vervoort et al., 2020)? En hoe kunnen de effecten van mens–kunst-interactie worden geduid in termen van waarden, relaties en gemeenschapsvorming (scaling deep), als basis voor een betekenisvolle doorvertaling naar andere contexten (scaling out) (Fraser, 2010 & 2023; Moore et al., 2015)? Het onderzoek brengt ervaringen, emoties, betekenissen en mogelijke verschuivingen in denken en handelen in kaart en bouwt met kwalitatief onderzoek voort op de data die de installatie genereert: • EGG als Canvas: bezoekers laten geschreven, getekende en materiële sporen achter; • EGG Radio: een participatief platform waar met name jongeren in gesprek gaan over hun ervaringen; • AR- en sensordata: die interacties, aandacht en resonantiepatronen zichtbaar maken.
