What is an Innovation Impact Challenge?

The Innovation Impact Challenge is an innovation competition run by the government.

Companies are challenged to develop new products or services that address a specific societal issue.

It is not a subsidy, but a research and development contract. The government acts as the first potential customer (a “launching customer”).

Who is the IIC for?

The challenges are intended for:

  • IX makers and creative entrepreneurs
  • innovative companies and start-ups
  • consortia of companies and knowledge institutions

They work together on solutions using immersive technology for societal challenges.

How does a challenge work?

An Innovation Impact Challenge usually has three steps:

1. Application
Companies submit a proposal while the challenge is open.

2. Phase 1 – research
The best proposals carry out a feasibility study, assessing whether the solution is technically, legally, and financially viable.

3. Phase 2 – development
The best projects develop a prototype and test it in practice.

After this, the innovation can be further developed and may be procured by the government.

What does participation deliver?

For companies:

  • an R&D contract with the government (not a subsidy)
  • faster innovation and development
  • chance to gain an initial customer (the government)
  • collaboration with companies and knowledge partners
  • real-world testing with end users

For governments:

  • access to new and creative solutions
  • collaboration with innovative market parties
  • working prototypes tested in practice
  • faster innovation in societal challenges

Ongoing Innovation Impact Challenges

Within CIIIC, three challenges are currently running:

  • IX for social inclusion and cohesion
  • IX in urban development
  • IX for the Dutch National Police Nederlandse Politie

In these challenges, companies and public organisations work together on concrete applications of immersive technology with societal impact.

Solving societal challenges with IX

The IIC Method

The Innovation Impact Challenge (IIC) connects IX creators with large commissioning parties to solve concrete societal challenges. Each theme has multiple phases: from exploration and prototyping to large-scale demonstration.

Consortia of creators, knowledge institutions and adopters work together on innovative solutions. The methodology has been developed with years of experience in challenge-based innovation.

In collaboration with RVO

All IIC calls are implemented in collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). RVO handles the subsidy administration and guides consortia through the application process.
